Since, MAGLEV does NOT require such. ** Current bearing technology has forced wind turbine designers into horizontal spindle three bladed wind turbines. In this design the huge blades are connected to a spindle in the center. The bearings that support the spindle and control the pitch of the blades (which can be hundreds of feet long) see huge pitch-moment loading, some of which is manifest as torque energy that is focused through the center spindle. The target speed for the spindle is 18 or 20 rpm and the bearings holding the spindle are mounted in a huge casting which also contains a large gearbox stepping the speed up to 1800 to 2000 RPMs which allows for the proper surface speed relationship between the coils and magnets. It is necessary to invert or condition the current, which is expensive. This gearbox is full of many large bearings, gears and castings; for a 2 MW turbine the gearbox can easily weigh 30 tons. This gearbox needs to be mounted on the top of a pole more than 150 feet in the air and be able to support the turbine blades under full-force wind conditions. ***MAGLEV Power Generation, the pitch moment ratio is closer to 1-to-1 then the 100-to-1 as with a horizontal spindle design.

interesting idea, but that thing is huge! looks >200m tall and surely would cost a long way upwards of $2 billion. the problem is… is there anywhere feasible (appropriate land for construction, and proximity to urban areas) that you could put it where sufficient wind is guaranteed almost 24/7?

Great idea to reduce friction and eliminate most maintenance, but I would imagine an array of powerful permanent magnets would be quite expensive. My question is, what measure is in place to prevent the structure from becoming mis-aligned with the magnets? For example if you place two magnets on top of each other one will not float, it will be displaced to the side. Therefore you would need magnets along the vertical axis as well to maintain alignment or the friction would be too great.

sounds good but that seems like a $3 billion project. i guess they’ve gotta work up to that size with smaller demonstration projects.

Cost, safety, and size aside, the major factor in my doubt is the MagLev aspect. You need power to create that effect. I seriously doubt that it would be able to sustain itself because something that big would take a tremendous amount of power to get off the ground.
@astrialkil We can easily live without contributing to killing innocent animals. There are hundreds of millions of vegetarian people on the planet. I do not care if you call it a “denial of the evolution”. It can and SHOULD be done.

No one gives you money unless they make most of the money.
And people would listen to you more about your veg habits if you gave away your ideas. They cant call you evil if you bettered the world at your own expense.
@astrialkil It takes someone highly knowledgeable and motivated to build it. It is not a magnet motor. And yes, I am properly greedy, because I want to make big money and change the world for the better not only regarding energy and ecology, but also ethics – I want to promote vegetarianism.
@henrykay01 Why don’t you just start building them under public domain then sit back smugly as everyone copies your idea THERE BY CHANGING THE WORLD IN 5 YEARS! or you can just be greedy and have it go NOWHERE! like all the other patents went no place, they just sit in the file box gathering dust! Try using the GNU Copy Left! or creative commons! That way every machinist can make his own, then you will have 1000′s of demos that the machinists paid for themselves!

Wind “farms” are really just industrial complexes and should be labeled as such. The word “farm” conjures images of pastoral scenery.
This maglev would save a lot of scenery from being spoiled in the ironic quest to “reduce the human footprint” (i.e. carbon, not physical).

intro: there is no unambiguous evidence which proves star formation is taking place: just because dust gets blown in certain directions, doesn’t mean it collapses into a new star!!! dust just clears from one area and goes to the next and a star which is ALREADY THERE is now exposed when it was previously hidden by dust!!! but u don’t see that explanation in textbooks … drdino.com

This idea really doesn’t seem feasible to me for a number of reasons.
Can you point me to the demo model that works? Seems simple, but alas many simple things are fiction. The current industrial wind turbines are an ill conceived plague, ruining the countryside. So many are required to make meaningful gains we would have to ruin thousands of square mile to duplicate a medium size power plant. And the plant can’t be replaced for the days the wind doesn’t blow!
What is sad is this would be a solution to help stop global warming, yet we’ll never see it due to red tape, patents etc and other political crap.
2GW, that’s more then enough to power the Delorean time machine and still have some power left over!
