How to Build a Wind Turbine for Home
You can easily build a wind turbine for your home that will
allow you to capture the wind and use it as an
alternate energy source by building your own wind turbine.
If you’ve ever seen a windstorm or the damage done by high
force winds you have seen the amazing power the wind has.
Capturing that power and transforming it into a useable form of
energy has been around for many years through the use of
windmills.
A wind generator can be broken down into three parts:
- The rotor blades
- The shaft
- The generator
Buying one can be a fairly expensive venture that might not
pay off if you don’t live in an area with a lot of wind.
Building your own wind power generator is more economical
and you can see if it will work for you.
First, you need to gather the necessary parts, most can be
found at your local hardware store or by going online and doing
a search. With a little research you can make some of the
parts yourself. The core parts of to build a wind turbine
are:
- DC Powered Motor
- Body Assembly
- Tail Assembly
- Blades
- Hub (connects propeller to motor)
- Tower
- Battery Bank
- Nuts and bolts
There are a few miscellaneous items you may need as
well, plus you will also need to make sure you have a socket
set, several screwdrivers, a jigsaw, grinder and sandpaper.
Putting It All Together
First, you need to attach the blades to the hub. Using a
length of steel or other strong metal to attach them will add
strength to the windmill for high winds.
When you have the blades attached check them for balance, if
they are off balance the shaft of the motor will be damaged in
the long run.
Next, the hub should have a hole drilled in the exact center
the same size as the shaft. Attach the hub to the motor by
sliding it over the shaft. Once you have it on the shaft, drill
a hole as close as possible to the hub through the shaft.
Insert a bolt through the hole to hold the shaft on the
motor. Now you are ready to set this on its axis to allow it to
rotate horizontally.
Now you are ready to add the tailpiece so that the blades
are always facing the wind. Once you have this together, you
are ready to wire it all together and put it on its tower.
You should make sure you are referring to a detailed diagram
with instructions for wire selection. You will wire the DC
motor to the charge controller to the battery pack and finally
to an AC inverter for using as household electricity.
Do it yourself wind power doesn’t have to cost a fortune.
Using a set of instructions like those in the Earth4Energy
book, you can build one for less than $200 and start your home
on the path to freedom from the electrical grid.
These instructions give you a brief overview of how to build
a wind turbine for the home. Wind power is a great energy
alternative and Earth4Energy shows you in great detail,
including step-by-step instructional videos, of how to make
your own wind powered generator.
